Reinventing the Wheelchair

No child should be required to use an adult wheelchair, especially those children who have lost hands to cluster bombs or land mines and are unable to push traditional wheels without experiencing extreme pain, pressure ulcers, permanent bone infection and eventual death. Confined to a wheelchair for life, lever drive is the only reasonable means of propulsion available to these children. Portrola Foundation is currently developing just such a wheelchair.

Industrial Designer Peter Muller, a member of the foundation’s development team, has engineered a lever action wheelchair which is strong light, shock absorbing and durable enough for indefinite trouble-free use over any terrain.

This chair is being developed specifically for donation to the International Red cross.
