Forearm Crutch

Spina Bifida and Land Mine Survivors

Problem: Children with spina bifida are rarely capable of using their legs. The standard forearm crutches focus the entire weight onto immature wrist and hand bones. Soon paralyzed, and deformed, these hands require costly, reconstructive surgery every two years.

Further, adult land mine survivors also experience hand paralysis from standard forearm crutches. This is especially difficult in areas of the world where reconstructive surgery is unavailable, paralysis remains permanent, placing an undue burden on villages and long term expense on the ICRC.
Solution: Portrola, the foundations replacement for the forearm crutch, is engineered to distribute the body’s weight between the palm and mid forearm with easily adjustable guides which prevent rotation of the hand around the grip and breakdown of the small bones of the wrist and hand, inevitably leading to paralyses. Portrola prevents this micellaneous changes.
