Further, adult land mine survivors also experience hand paralysis from standard forearm crutches. This is especially difficult in areas of the world where reconstructive surgery is unavailable, paralysis remains permanent, placing an undue burden on villages and long term expense on the ICRC.
Solution: The foundation's “ATHLETE,” underarm crutch, provides comfort and strength with no pain or underarm swelling. For women they protect lymph nodes and breast tissue from injury while providing safe, secure support. The frontal flange was engineered to protect the breast while the outboard grips further increase the user’s strength. Taken together they increase the user’s strength by a factor of four.
ATHLETE was developed for use by the San Francisco 49ers football team to create secure mobility after surgeries and during recovery from injuries. Adapted by the Veterans Administration to replace traditional crutches, ATHLETE will better serve our injured veterans.
